Daring to Dream - What Do You Want to Do?
If you followed the previous article, you should have some ideas about what you want to BE in the next stage of your life. So the next question is; what do you want to DO during that phase?
Dare to Dream
As with dreaming about what you want to BE, dreaming about what you want to DO will require you to challenge what you, friends and family considered normal. You will need to think in new ways about how you want to spend your time if it is not to stay in an unsatisfying job, waiting for the mythical "someday" when it will all magically change. If you start by ignoring the usual assumptions about the money needed to do things, then the possibilities are unbounded. So much choice makes finding the dream difficult.
Someday is Here - What Life do You Want?
Having accepted the old certainties have gone now is time to look forward and chart a new course in life. Many people spend their life waiting for the "someday" when they can do something more satisfying. For most "someday" never comes.
It will never come if you are passive and just wait for something to happen. Instead you should be more active and work at making change happen. It is especially important to seek something new when one's world is disrupted. The opportunities presented by job loss or lack of career jobs for new graduates should provide the final push to cause one to think differently. It will give purpose at a difficult time.
Graduates and School Leavers Starting Out In Difficult Times
In the current difficult economic times many college and school leavers are struggling to get on the career ladder. Rather than getting stressed it is an opportunity to think differently about work and life. Many young people entering the job market do not have a clear idea of what career they wish to follow. Also many have had little experience beyond school, college and their home town. It is then all too easy to fall into a job and a career by default and be trapped by a regular salary in work they do not enjoy. Soon they are looking forward to that "some day" when they will do something different; before they know it they are waiting for their retirement.
A Better Life Starts Here
Losing a job to redundancy or lay-offs is a good time to review career and lifestyle objectives. Once the initial disruption is overcome a positive approach can lead to improved quality of life.
Rarely does redundancy come out of the blue. Most people see the signs and the actual lay-off is relief from an uncomfortable period of uncertainty. The secret is to use it and the immediate post lay-off time positively. Like all big changes it will be an opportunity with the right attitude of mind.
